Free swimming for the holidays

FREE swimming for under 16s and over 60s in Warrington will still be available until the end of the summer holidays.
The Government’s Department of Culture, Media and Sport announced several weeks ago that funding for free swimming would end on July 31 as part of the programme to reduce the level of public sector spending.
But Warrington Borough Council has decided to extend free swimming until August 31.
From September the variety of packages offered by leisure centres across the town will be widened to take into account the withdrawal of free swimming, including a “pay as you go” option.
Coun Bob Timmis, the council’s executive member for leisure and skills, said: “Despite the withdrawal of central government funding, I am delighted we have been able to extend free swimming so that young people in particular can make the most of their local swimming pool during the school holiday.”

  1. Another no-brainer.

They are promoting a Healthy Lifestyle, and then stop the free swimming which will stop people going. I wonder what they will stop next?

  2. I always thought free swimming was only ever available during the school summer holidays ie July/August. Ooops 🙁 Shame that the government have scrapped it although good that the council have choses to extended it until the end of the school summer holidays at least for those that use it. On a similar topic though WHY are the councils Select Leisure memberships for places like Broomfields and Fordton etc so expensive? A Student membership (in full time education) costs £25 a month or one payment of £250 year. That’s an awful lot for a 16+ year old to pay. Adult membership is £31.50 a month or one payment of £315 a year. OUCH… we obviously didn’t join ! Considering these are council owned public facilities you’d expect them to be a LOT cheaper that the private centres such as Total Fitness etc. Shame 🙁
