Prison teachers in walk out

1

TEACHING staff at Warrington’s Thorn Cross Young Offenders’ Institution walked out today in protest at changes in their contracts which they claim will cost them thousands of pounds a year.
They are among members of the University and College Union (UCU) at around 70 prisons across the country opposing the changes.
Some claim they will lose up to £7,000-a-year.
The staff work for The Manchester College (TMC) which runs courses at institutions across the county and want to introduce new contracts which would increase working hours and reduce holiday and sickness entitlements.
A UCU spokeswoman said the changes would “seriously jeopardise” prison education which is a key factor in reducing re-offending rates.

  1. Now correct me if I’m wrong, but there is a European working time directive which limits the hours a person can be made to work (except for doctors) Holidays are also set in stone with regards to minimum amounts etc….. which then leaves sickness entitlements???? How can you have a sickness entitlements? do they mean that they are allowed to have so many days off a year sick without being disciplined (which they will probably class as a god given right?) Do they mean they are going to have to take the same holidays as normal working people instead of their typically inflated teacher type ones…… and are they being asked to do a proper weeks work (as in 40 hours or so like normal people) or am I missing the point?
