TOWN Hall bosses at Warrington have decided to sell eleven pieces of land with an estimated value of about £1 million.
But two other sites – originally also on a list of properties to be disposed of – will not be sold.
They are agricultural land at the rear of Warrington Road, Glazebury and a garage site at Kimberley Street, Whitecross.
In both cases, there was strenuous opposition to the proposed sales from local people.
Sites to be sold are: Farrell Street/Howley Lane; land at rear of Warrington Rowing Club; former public convenience, Winwick Road; Manchester Road junction; land at Green Street; garage site at John Road/Thornley Road, Lymm; garage site at Central Avenue, Orford; 4 and 6 Central Avenue and 89 West Avenue, Orford; garage plot at Ellen Street, Bewsey; land at Kerfoot Street/Folly Lane; land at Currans Road, Orford.
The council consulted local residents in each case before deciding to press ahead.
In most cases, there was little response. But at Glazebury were was an uproar among local residents, 60 of who attended a protest meeting.
They were concerned about the possibility of houses being built on farm land at the rear of existing houses in Warrington Road and Hurst Lane.
At Whitecross there was opposition from Coun Bob Timmis and Coun Jo Crotty who feared increased parking problems and pointed out the site was almost 90 per cent occupied. There were also concerns from the nearby primary school.
Coun Bob Barr, (pictured) the borough’s executive member for planning and regeneration, said: “We listened to the public and decided it would be sensible to withdraw this land from sale.
“This was never a done deal.”

Why, its like Thatcher strapping all the assets of the country to balance the books. Very short sighted and wrong for a council to do without asking the electorate

I live close to the Lymm site and was never consulted in any way.
even if you were they would have pressed ahead. consultation to WBC is the process of letting you know what they have decided two years ago, a week before everything goes through.
I all fairness to the Council they are now NOT selling the two pieces of land that got a cold reception of opposition from nearby residents. If no-one was interested or objected to the other sites being sold then what’s the problem ? However how will the Council sell the pieces of land… will they be advertised through local estate agents so anyone and everyone has a chance to buy them if they so wish to.
Very shortsighted Doctor in not reading the item thoroughly in your haste to cast scorn. The electorate (interested parties) were asked and as others have mentioned two parcels of land were removed from the list..
