ENTHUSIATIC local people of all ages will carry the baton for Warrington as part in an historic relay next week.
The 21st anniversary of the Trans Pennine Trail (TPT) is being celebrated with a regional baton relay, with five batons setting from the end points of the trail and heading toward a central point in Barnsley, where a celebration festival will take place.
A large number of local people have volunteered to carry the baton along the Warrington section of the trail.
Details are still being worked out, but children from Penketh South Primary School will receive the baton from Halton at 1.30pm on Monday (June 14) and will be joined by the Mayor, Coun John Joyce.
They will then cycle to Great Sankey and hand the baton over to children from Evelyn Street School who will cycle to Morley Common and hand over to walkers linked to Latchford West Community Forum.
The walkers will take the baton to Bradshaw Lane, Grappenhall and pass it on to members of the University of the Third Age who will walk it to Lymm
It’s then the turn of the 4th Lymm Cubs who will walk the baton to the Co-op store by Birchbrook Road.
Megan Lakey, 11, daughter of the cub leader, will keep the baton safe overnight and the following morning rangers Elaine Moss and Tim Baker will walk with Megan and Mike Bailey – who instigated the Warrington route – and local early-morning walkers, to hand over the baton to Trafford at 9.30am.
Warrington is one of 26 councils along the 210 miles of the Trail
On the final leg of the journey, on June 20, all the batons will be carried to Barnsley’s football ground where a 21st anniversary celebration festival will take place.
