A FRIENDSHIP between Lymm Royal British Legion president Ray Massey and a Dutch engineer has resulted in the
village acquiring a replica of a piece of local history.
Motor cycle enthusiast Theo Bult drove from the Netherlands to spend two nights with Ray – and deliver a replica of a brass plaque commemorating local volunteers who served with the Cheshire Regiment in the South African War, 1900-1902.
Last year, Lymm Life reported how Ray had found a photocopy of the old plaque among his collection of British Legion memorabilia.
At the time, Ray thought the original plaque had gone missing but in fact it was on display in a local day nursery, built on the site of the old drill hall where it was originally on show.
But Ray thought it would still be a good idea to have a replica made for public display.
He appealed for someone who could make a replica – and Theo came forward.
The pair had become friends many years ago when they collaborated on a project involving the engineering department of Twente University, Enschede, Netherlands, where Theo worked.
Theo suggested Ray send him the photocopy – and produced a virtually exact copy using equipment at the university.
Then he drove over to deliver it!
The replica now hangs on display in Lymm Royal British Legion Club, although Raymond hopes it may eventually be hung in St Mary’s Church.
A delighted Ray said: “It was wonderful to see Theo again. He is now 66 and about to retire. But he drove 600 miles to deliver the plaque.”
