Carry on tipping, company told

A WASTE disposal company which has been tipping in the Warrington area for about 30 years has won planning consent for another year – little more than 12 months after winning permission for a similar extension.
The borough council’s development control committee has given the go-ahead for Collier Industrial Waste to carry on using the site at Fir Tree Farm and Moss Hall Farm, off Moss Side Lane, Rixton, until January 26 next year.
Although in the past there has been vigorous opposition from nearby residents, only one person lodged an objection, on the grounds of environmental nuisance and inconvenience to residents caused by traffic, noise, smells, litter and impact on the Rixton Clay Pits Nature Reserve.
Officers recommended approval and pointed out that if the application was refused, the company would be able to appeal and carry on working the site while the appeal was determined.
A year ago, Collier claimed it needed an extra 12 months to give it time to prepare an application to extend the life of the tip for another six years.
If this were granted, the capacity of the site would be increased by 750,000 cubic metres but the company indicated they would reduce the capacity of an adjoining landfill site they own on land off Moat Lane, Rixton.
The committee was told the company’s intention now was to make applications next January for both sites indicating the long term land use implications for the Rixton area.
