Students thrive in kitchen heat

STUDENTS from Warrington are proving they can stand the heat in the kitchen after having been selected as one of 12 contenders in the national heats of a major national student catering competition.
The Nestlé Toque d’Or contest boasts James Martin and Jamie Oliver among past competitors and sets teams of students the challenge of creating and running their own restaurant, with a panel of experts judging them on every minute area of their concept, service, food and presentation.
Students from Warrington Collegiate have beaten off competition from other colleges in the UK, all of which had to submit detailed proposals to the judges in order to make it to the national heats.
This had to cover the whole concept for their restaurant and they will be judged on everything from the food they serve to the design of the menu.
Judging has now taken place at the Collegiate’s on site restaurant, Buckley’s, with the college’s team having to pull out all the stops with a three-course meal designed to whet the judge’s appetites.
Nestlé Toque d’Or was founded in 1988 with the aim of rewarding young chefs who were prepared to invest their time to test their knowledge and skills. It began as a competition for individual chefs to demonstrate their flair, but has evolved to become a team competition, highlighting the importance of teamwork in a successful kitchen.
Now the Collegiate can go forward into the Grand Finals where the students will have to produce their heat menu for 100 guests in the Nestlé Toque d’Or Restaurant over one day at the BBC Summer Good Food Show, Birmingham.
The winning team would gain places on the Nestlé Toque d’Or Study Trip, a once in a lifetime trip to some of the best kitchens in the world and the college would receive £4,000 of equipment for its kitchens.
Collegiate lecturer Dan Turner said: “The hard work and dedication the students have put in to get to this stage of the competition is immense and we know we’re going to have to pull out all the stops to demonstrate not only our cooking skills, but that we have the creativity, and attention to detail needed to beat off our competitors.
“The Nestlé Toque d’Or is the pinnacle of achievement for catering students and so we see it as vital to make sure our students not only take part, but are a real threat to the other contenders.”
