COUNCIL chiefs at Warrington moved swiftly to arrange for the demolition of a 45ft chimney at a school after experts warned that it was unsafe.
The chimney on the boiler house at Evelyn Street Primary School was partially demolished by a specialist firm. The cost is expected to be about £21,000.
A council spokesman said the chimney was inspected periodically along with other similar structures.
Steeplejacks visited the site on February and became concerned about the structural integrity of the chimney. Health and safety staff advised on action to make the structure safe
The work was carried out over the weekend while the school was closed and occupiers of nearby buildings were warned of what was happening.
The chimney was reduced to 21ft in height.
