PRIMARY school pupils in Warrington are in good books after achieving the highest attendance figures in the country.
New figures show that primary school attendance in the borough are not just well above the national average but are rated top in the country.
Attendances at high schools in the town are also well above the national average and 14th highest in the country.
Schools work to ensure pupils attend regularly by closely monitoring attendance and working with families.
The council’s attendance team also work closely with all schools to offer advice and support and carry out home visits. On rare occasions they take legal action against parents who fail to ensure that their child attends school regularly.
Coun Sheila Woodyatt, (pictured) the borough’s executive member for children and young people’s services, said: “We are very proud of the fact that in Warrington school attendance and school attainment are both high. If children attend school regularly they are more likely to do well.
“The excellent outcomes achieved by our schools are all the more pleasing given that Warrington is one of the poorest funded local authorities in the country, ranked 122 out of 151 in terms of the funding we receive for the education for each pupil.”
This success follows news reported in Warrington Worldwide last week that the number of pupils in the borough gaining five or more GCSE’s grades A to C rose to 60 per cent making Warrington 13th highest in the country – up from 32nd last year.
