Sarah chosen for rugby sevens

A WARRINGTON woman is taking part in the Hong Kong Women’s Rugby Sevens – as a member of the Arabian Gulf team.
Sarah Bennett, 32, a primary school teacher in Dubai, normally plays for the Dubai Hurricanes, in the Gulf League.
The former Twiss Green Primary and Culcheth High School pupil (pictured) was invited to train with the Arabian Gulf team – a side made up of the best players from the Gulf States, United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Kuwait, etc.
As a result she was selected for the 10-strong squad.
The Gulf side will be up against newly-crowned World Champions Australia, Thailand and Tunisia in their group and are confident of finishing at least second.
Sarah said: “Many of the teams at international level are professionals who get paid through funding, but we are just normal people with normal jobs, who enjoy playing rugby, so its been a big jump and a steep learning curve to suddenly be playing in front of 50,000 people.
“I was chuffed to bits when I made the squad.”
Sarah first played rugby at Leigh Rugby Union Club and later played while a student at Leeds University.
