Charity launches baby hip health week

WARRINGTON-based charity STEPS is to launch Baby Hip Health Week in February to coincide with publication of their report into standards os screening and diagnosis in hospitals and primary care trusts across the country.
Initial findings indicate that alarmingly, many PCT’s do not even have a hip examination policy, which is an important part of the newborn and 6-8 week physical baby health check.
Baby Hip Week will be held from February 23-28.
Every year, up to 2,000 babies and children are diagnosed with Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip (DDH) which describes a range of conditions from mild instability and immaturity to total dislocation of the hip.
Treatment can vary depending on the severity of the hip condition and how early it was detected but full body plaster casts (hip spicas) and even surgery can be required.
Late diagnoses can lead to early hip replacement and osteoarthritis, for which there is no cure.
STEPS Baby Hip Health Week is aimed at raising awareness with all parents about possible hip problems. The charity is suggesting that people ‘Put the Kettle On’ for STEPS whereby they hold a tea/coffee morning at home, work or in the community to spread the word and raise funds at the same time. Parents can also help by distributing the STEPS award winning leaflet on Baby Hip Health to their local surgeries and baby clinics.
Even if the hips appear to be normal it is important to be aware of signs that might mean there is a problem. The signs parents should look out for include one leg appearing shorter than the other, an extra deep crease on the inside of the thigh, crawling with one leg dragging or walking with a limp or a waddle. Whilst these signs are not conclusive, they may indicate the need for further investigation.
Anyone concerned their child has a hip problem should seek advice from their GP or Health Visitor immediately since treatment is usually less complex the earlier it is started.
Anyone wishing to get further advice, distribute leaflets or wanting to host a “Put the Kettle on” event please contact the STEPS helpline on 0871 717 0044 or visit the STEPS website: www.steps-charity.org.uk
