Residents urged to recycle electricals

WARRINGTON residents are being urged to clear out their cupboard and recycle old electrical goods.
About a quarter of people are believed to be buying electrical or electronic goods at presents at Christmas and that will mean many old items will be discarded.
The borough council says instead of letting the old items gather dust in a cupboard, people should recycle them.
New research has shown that, on average, families have around three old, broken or unwanted small electrical goods stored around the home.
There’s huge potential to recycle these items into new products, rather than throw them away.
Some retailers will take back old electrical items in store. A visit to www.recyclenow.com which shops will take back old electricals.
Unwanted electrical goods can also be taken to one of the three local community recycling centres, which are open everyday except for Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.
A visit to www.recycleforwarrington.co.uk will reveal the nearest drop off point and what items can be recycled at each site. Alternatively, a call to Contact Warrington on 01925 443322 will provide the information.
Coun Alan Litton, the council’s executive member for environment services, said: “As Christmas shoppers hit the high streets in search of this year’s hot gadget gifts for loved ones, it’s the ideal time to think about recycling old electrical goods lying about the house to make room for the new ones.
“If every household in the UK returned just one item for recycling, we could reprocess more than 24,500 tonnes of unwanted small electrical items into new goods.”
