Residents lose takeaway battle

RESIDENTS have lost a battle to stop a hot food takeaway opening in a shopping parade which already contains two existing takeaways and an off-licence.
Fourteen neighbours had objected to the scheme in Warrington Road, Penketh, along with the parish council and local borough councillor Fiona Bruce.
There was particular anger that the shop had opened before any planning application had been received and had continued trading while the application was being considered.
But the borough’s development control committee decided the takeaway could stay in business after studying reports by officers.
An earlier scheme to change a newsagents’ shop into a takeaway was refused – despite an appeal – because it would mean the loss of an important local service.
But the approved scheme retains the newsagent and places the takeaway in a single-storey annexe previously used for storage.
Objectors claimed there was no need for another takeaway shop which would increase problems of noise, litter, cooking smells and parking,
But the committee accepted officers’ views that there was adequate parking and no significant impact on the character of the area.
