POLICE at Warrington and across Cheshire are targeting drivers who drink in the run-up to Christmas.
Last week, 44 drivers were arrested for drink or drug impaired driving across the county – 37 men and seven women.
Of these, the majority were aged between 36 and 50 and a small proportion were young drivers of 19 or less. Historically drink and drug drive campaigns have resulted in the arrest of more men than women and this year is no exception.
Roads liaison officer Mike Jones said: “Despite all the warnings and awareness surrounding drink and drug driving at this time of year, it seems that some drivers are still taking the risk.
“We will continue to test people at the roadside and expect the numbers to rise even more as we get closer to Christmas. We want everyone to enjoy Christmas but we urge you to not drink drive – don’t become a statistic, a casualty or end up behind bars.
“Predictably the majority of the arrests took place in the early hours of the morning but worryingly two people failed the test the morning after and seven people tested positive in the afternoon.”
