POLICE in Warrington are warning motorists to be on their guard as winter weather takes hold.
Temperatures have plummeted in recent weeks and the combination of dark nights, freezing temperatures and icy roads has made driving conditions difficult for many motorists.
Road policing officers are warning drivers to take extra care on the roads if they are out and about visiting family and friends during the Christmas and New Year period and to ensure they fully prepare for every journey.
Road safety officer PC Dave Murray said: “Potentially hazardous weather conditions highlight the need for motorists to be one step ahead when planning journeys, particularly if that journey is lengthy or takes a route through exposed and sparsely populated areas.
“Responsible drivers will be fully prepared, will have checked their route and consulted local sources of weather information. The overriding message is be prepared and plan your journey.
“Aside from the obvious problems caused by ice or snow during the winter, motorists can also encounter difficult driving conditions due to spray caused by excess water on the roads.
“Heavy rain and spray can reduce visibility and all drivers should take extra care during these conditions and should be particularly alert to the possible presence of motorbikes and cyclists who can be difficult to spot.
“But even in good weather there are potential dangers. During the winter months the sun remains low in the sky and can seriously hamper visibility. This can be worsened by wet or damp roads which create glare and cause further problems.”
