£1 million play boost for town

AT least 22 new children’s play areas will be built at Warrington 12 months earlier than originally planned – thanks to the “credit crunch.”
About £1.1 million Government funding will be made available from April as part of a £235 million package to transform play areas across the country.
Warrington was originally due to receive the funding in April 2010 but, as part of the Government’s drive to get the country through the economic downturn, £30 million of the funding has been brought forward.
Labour councillor Paul Kenny, who represents the Fairfield and Howley area of the borough, welcomed the news.
He said: “This is great news for the town. It will mean we can develop and rebuild children’s play areas across our community – benefiting thousands of children and families in our area.
“I’m pleased that the government has decided to bring forward this funding, so that we can get better facilities available to children sooner, and support the local economy at the same time.
“The council must ensure that the local community is fully involved in deciding how and where this funding should be spent so it is important that local parents get involved in the process.
“Play is vital to help children have fun, but it can also keep them happy and healthy and allow them to develop and explore the world. This funding from the Government will help to ensure all children have somewhere safe, stimulating and exciting to play outdoors.”
Coun Kenny said he was anxious to hear from parents about where there was a need for new play facilities in Fairfield and Howley.
Warrington South MP Helen Southworth also welcomed the additional funding.
She said: I am delighted that the Government is funding our local communities to improve the facilities we offer our children and young people, and am really pleased that my constituents in Warrington will be benefiting directly.
“I know from speaking to local people and from the emails and letters that I receive from adults and children alike, that the quality of facilities and more general opportunities we currently offer to young people in the area can be greatly improved.”
Warrington North MP Helen Jones added: “This is great news for Warrington. It will mean we can develop
and rebuild children’s play areas across our community – benefiting thousands of children and their families.
“I want to make sure the local community is fully involved in deciding how and where this funding should be spent. That’s why I want to hear the views of local parents.”
