Major study on future of park

A MAJOR study of the potential for enhanced recreational facilities in one of Warrington’s biggest parks is due to start next month.
The study will not only cover Sankey Valley Park but also the Sankey Canal – the oldest man-made waterway in England.
A report on the findings of the study is expected by the end of February.
It will consider the canal and adjoining parklands and also the impact and opportunities from adjoining landholdings and business interests.
The study brief includes consideration of the park as a tourist and visitor destination, access and green transportation opportunities, contributions to climate change objectives and flood risk considerations and future provision, partnership and management options.
It will also consider lost facilities – such as children’s play areas, public art, heritage features, ranger centre and visitor facilities including public toilets.
The first phase of the programme of works will focus on fishery and angling developments and has been sponsored by the Environment Agency to the value of £35,000.
Together with the other findings of the study, these are expected to be a catalyst for a longer term master plan for the redevelopment of the canal and park network.
Sankey Valley covers some 15 miles, linking Warrington with St Helens and Widnes.
It has woodlands, grasslands and water features with footpaths and cycleways – including a section of the Trans Pennine Trail.
The central section of the park is family orientated with children’s play features, a maze and lawned areas. It offers the visitors beautiful surrounds to enjoy walking, birdwatching, angling and cycling.
