Do villagers want CCTV cameras?

CULCHETH residents are being asked if they want CCTV cameras in the village.
Police have come up with the idea, following a number of serious burglaries in recent months.
They believe a camera strategically placed at the junction of

Common Lane and Warrington Road would pick up cars entering and leaving the village and act as a deterrent.
But the cost is likely to be around £30,000.
CCTV has been considered by Culcheth and Glazebury Parish Council in the past.
Proposals put forward about seven years ago came to nothing when it was discovered how much they would cost and businesses were reluctant to contribute.
Coun Keith Bland said: “If we are to press ahead with CCTV now we need a partnership between the council, the businesses and the police.
“Things have moved on and the cost might not now be so great.
“But before we do anything we need to know whether people want CCTV. There are all sorts of implications. The regulations are a minefield.
“The police believe it would be helpful in deterring crime but the cost, in particular the ongoing cost of running the cameras, is still a big consideration.
“So we are looking for input from the public, including shopkeepers and other businesses.”
The council is also looking at the possibility of more double yellow lines in Common Lane to reduce parking problems.
