Legion aims to solve parking problem

THE British Legion in Culcheth is making an attempt to solve the village’s parking problems by offering the use of its large car park to local businesses.
Manager at the legion club, which is now being renamed as the Village Club, Chris Chapman, wants to hear the thoughts of all Culcheth businesses on the idea.
He believes allowing people

who work in the village to park at the legion will free up other spaces within the village for shoppers and residents.
Chris said: “We want to somehow help the village overcome the parking problems. I have been trying to go round the businesses to try and get some feedback on the idea.”
So far only accountancy firm Styles and Co have taken up the idea of using the car park, but it is hoped more businesses will get in contact with Chris with their thoughts on his scheme.
Chairman of Culcheth and Glazebury Parish Council, Ileyne Hutchinson, believes the move will be very positive for Culcheth.
She said: “It is an excellent idea. Parking in Culcheth is becoming absolutely dire and something has to be done.
“My opinion has always been shoppers would not use the legion car park if it was pay and display because it is too far to walk back from the shops with bags. It would be a good idea for the businesses because it would only be a three or four minute walk for most workers.”
One of the areas that is being highlighted a root cause of the parking problems is inaccuracies with the Local Centres study.
Parish Councillor Jacqui Johnson believes the parish council should be consulted on this study in future.
She said: “The Local Centres study doesn’t take into account things like pubs and in Glazebury doesn’t even account for Bent’s Garden and Home. The parish council should get a look the chance to look at the study before it is finalised.”
Any businesses interested in talking to Chris about the idea of parking at the Legion club can contact him on 07957 322 833.
