Lift-off for the water-powered rocket

SCIENCE students from a Warrington high school have blasted their way to success with an innovative water-powered rocket.
A team from Penketh High School won Daresbury Laboratory’s Lift-Off Rocket Challenge at Chester Race Course.
They managed to send their water rocket, which was carrying a hen’s egg, further than any of the other 25 competing schools, without the egg breaking.
Around 400 pupils took part in the challenge, which was divided into two events, one for seven to 11 year olds, and one for 11 to 16 year olds – known as the “payload challenge”, which Penketh won.
Learners were also able to take part in a robot making exercise and benefit from a talk from a UK space scientist.
Daresbury Laboratory’s Lift-Off Rocket Challenge supports the Science and Technology Facilities Council’s “Science in Society” programme, which aims to inform and engage people of all ages in science and technology.
Head of Science in Society at the laboratory, Tony Buckley, said: “The event aimed to show young people how the principles of science and physics they learn in the classroom can be applied in a fun way. It was great to see how much all the participants enjoyed the day.”
