Has the town really stopped smoking?

WARRINGTON is celebrating one year of the smoke-free law – with no fines or prosecutions in the town since the law was introduced.
The law has meant that virtually all workplaces and public places have been free from tobacco smoke since July last year.
In the nine months to March this year, Warrington’s trading standards department inspected more than 1,495 premises and vehicles and found more than 97 per cent to be complying with the regulations.
Peter Astley, head of trading standards said: “The council has been at the forefront of implementing the smoke-free law across the town. We have seen from experience that this is a popular law which has been embraced by businesses and the general public alike, with no fixed penalty notices or prosecutions to date.”
Coun Roy Smith, (pictured) the borough council’s executive member for community services, said: “The smoke-free law was an important step for public health in Warrington and its introduction has resulted in a significant reduction in second hand tobacco smoke with its damaging effects on health. Now everyone has the right to enjoy the benefits of a cleaner, healthier environment.”
Free help and support for smokers who wish to stop smoking is available from the local stop smoking service on 01925 843713.
Members of the public who wish to report a breach of the law should call the local environmental health department on 01925 442579 or the national compliance line on 0800 587 1667.
