Bouncer jailed for killing teenager

AN off-duty bouncer who killed Warrington teenager Ryan Kelly with a single punch has been sentenced to three years behind bars.
Wayne Jenks, 29, from Watkin Street, Warrington, dealt the fatal blow to the teenager while high on a cocktail of drink and drugs.
Jenks intervened on an argument between Ryan Kelly and friends in Warrington town centre, punching the youngster causing him to fall and hit his head.
Ryan died from head injuries in hospital, with Jenks pleading guilty at Chester Crown Court to a charge of manslaughter last month.
Police enquires into the 19-year-old’s death found that just days before the incident on February 29, Jenks had assaulted a 22-year-old woman and another man in the town centre.
Ryan’s mother gave an emotional impact statement to the Judge, saying: “Ryan was not just my only child, he was my soul-mate and nothing any one can do will change the fact that all I have now are memories and photographs. I now serve a life sentence as a result of this crime.
“Since Ryan’s untimely and tragic death on the 2nd March 2008, I feel like my whole world has been taken away. Ryan was my only child, and I can’t get the fact out of my head that I will never see his cheeky, sparkling smile brighten up my day ever again. Ryan’s death has not only affected me, but also his close family and friends, none more so, than my partner Phil, who played a very large part in Ryan’s upbringing.”
Ryan’s father Sean Kelly said of the tragic event: “Never in my wildest dreams did I anticipate an unprovoked attack on my precious son would change my life forever. Ryan was the archetype model citizen- he had never once been in trouble with the police, Ryan never looked for trouble and so I assumed that trouble would never find him, how wrong can you be.
“The action of Wayne Jenks has created so many victims from within my family and all are feeling the pain on a daily basis. Ryan was a much loved person by all his family and friends and he has been taken from us in such a meaningless and evil way. I myself have been left completely shattered by Ryan’s death.”
DI Edgar added: “This was a tragic case. A fine young man lost his life while enjoying a night out with his friends. This was an unprovoked attack in an all too regular incident involving drink which in this case exacerbated Jenks’s behaviour. This combined with drugs proved fatal for an innocent man.
Regardless of the sentence handed down; the family of Ryan Kelly have a life sentence, they will have to live every day without their son.”

  1. My heart goes out to Ryan’s family following this mindless act of violence. People like this, who clearly haven’t got any brain cell through drink and drug abuse, should be locked up for a long time.
