Site cabins plan for homeless approved

A CONTROVERSIAL plan to use site cabins to provide temporary accommodation for homeless people at Warrington has been given the go-ahead by planning bosses.
But the “on-site sleepers” have been given planning consent for just 12 months – not three years, as originally suggested.
The 10 cabins will each provided sleeping accommodation for two, with basic shower and kitchen facilities. They will be sited near the existing Alder Lodge hostel for the homeless at Orford.
A number of local residents had objected to the proposal on the grounds of unsightly appearance and the possibility of increased crime in the area.
But Warrington’s development control committee approved the scheme after hearing that the cabins would be staffed by an eight-strong team, 24-hours a day.
Homeless people will be allowed to stay in them for up to six weeks.
Town Hall chiefs see the cabins as innovative temporary solution to the problem of high levels of homelessness in the town, giving time to find permanent premises.
