Music bridges the generation gap

YOUNGSTERS from Warrington’s Callands Primary School and residents at nearby Woodleigh Residential Home have been proving age is no barrier when it comes to music.
Around 50 Year Six youngsters at the school have teamed up with residents at the home to form a unique intergenerational choir.
Weeks of practice for the choir have culminated in a special performance at the Pyramid Centre in front of Deputy Mayor Graham Wellborn.
Head teacher Kate Hamilton said: “It has been a truly fantastic experience for everyone involved and the children have enjoyed it so much.
“I think it important to get the young ones involved in events of this nature – it lets them interact with people a lot older than them and have fun in the process.”
Guests at the Pyramid Centre were also treated to a unique performance of “You are my sunshine” by Woodleigh resident Archie on his harmonica.
Traditional songs were not part of the performance list for the choir however, as modern hits from Kaiser Chiefs and Take That featured prominently.
Year Six teacher Lyn Parmenter commented: “There is a saying that says music brings us together and that is true of the choir. There have been lots of special moments and it’s been a privilege to be part of it.
“It has been a definite success and I think we will continue the special relationship we have with Woodleigh.”
Margaret, a resident at the home said: “I look forward to them coming. It’s one of the highlights of the week and I don’t want them to stop coming, seeing their little faces is great.”
An outside music teacher was brought in to take the one-hour sessions, which were held in the main room of the home.
Alesha Fox, aged 10, from Callands said: “I really don’t want to stop seeing Woodleigh, they are like family to me and make my day.”
Alex Furness, aged 10, added: “I think it’s made the old people feel alive again and show them that young people aren’t just thugs and muggers.”
