bend it like Beckham

by Gary Skentelbery

FORMER Warrington schoolgirl Charlotte Robinson has jetted off to America …to bend it like Beckham!
Rising girl soccer star Charlotte has left her home in Lymm to play soccer, just like Beckham.
Charlotte, aged 18, has gained a place at the prestigious South West Baptist University in Springfield, Missouri, USA and flew out for pre-season training and studies last week.
Former Lymm High School pupil Charlotte, who lives in Dyers Lane, Lymm is a life-long Manchester United fan and actually met her hero David Beckham while on holiday at La Manga in Spain where the England squad were training, in 2001.

An American theme farewell party was hosted for Charlotte by her father Kirk who runs Sportswear International, held for friends, family and former sports teaching staff and players at Lymm.

Storm – as busy road
closes a second time

by David Skentelbery

A STORM has broken over the closure of a vital access road to a village access road – only nine months after an earlier lengthy closure for resurfacing working costing more than ?576,000.
Visitors and traders at Lymm, Warrington, are furious at the new closure of Eagle Brow for the laying of gas mains.
Shopkeepers claim business was badly hit by the earlier closure, which went on for months and was dogged by delays.
Now they say trade is being affected again.
Eagle Brow is one of the main access routes to Lymm’s shopping centre.
Since the earlier closure, it has been hit several times by flooding after heavy rain. Water has reached within inches of inundating shop premises.
Residents are also infuriated by the new closure. One said: “No sooner have we a decent road surface on Eagle Brow than the powers that be decide to dig it up again.
“Traffic grinds to a halt and potholes will surely follow.
Are special abilities needed to be a ‘planner’ or is plain stupidity the only requirement?”
But Phil Johnson, head of transportation with Warrington Borough Council pointed out that the work was not being carried out by the council.
He said: “The works on Eagle Brow are to replace a gas main and are not being carried out by the council. However, we have no choice but to restrict driving access in the area so that this essential work can be carried out safely.
“These works will not have any effect on the maintenance scheme completed in October 2006 and the road will be as it was before this work began.”

Chris comes out on top
in battle with big cheeses

by John Hendon

GRAPHIC designer Chris Birks has been highly commended for his work on an exhibition stand he designed for an international cheese show.
Chris, from Old Hall, Warrington, designed the stand for clients Belton Cheese, of Whitchurch ? and it was highly commended by the judges at the prestigious show.
It was the icing on the cake for Chris, of 4 Corners Design, Warrington for he had already designed labels for the new Belton Farm branch cheese and also designed the firm?s corporate brochure.
He said: “There were exhibitors from all over the world and I was delighted for my client that their stand was so well received by the judges,” he said.
Forty-year-old Chris worked for 20 years with London agencies on accounts such as Sainsburys, the BBC and BMI Classics.
For the exhibition stand, Chris used a blow-up of a photograph taken by his client of the pastures surrounding Belton Farm on the Shropshire-Cheshire border.
“It gave the stand a real rural flavour, emphasising the fact they produce traditional, farmhouse cheeses,” he said.
Chris started his own graphic design agency two years ago, working from a studio in the Warrington Business School. Among his more recent successes has been a web site design for the Big Sleep Out, a local charity that helps young people faced with the prospect of sleeping rough.

Youngsters urged
to join fun run

by Lesley Wilkinson

YOUNGSTERS in Lymm are being encouraged to get fit and join in with the community at a Fun Run being organised on Sunday September 17.
The event, which has a healthy theme, is being organised by fundraisers for Oughtrington Community Centre.
One of the organisers Samara Hodi said: “We hope to build on the momentum created by last year’s event, in which over 100 children took part, not merely as a fundraising exercise, but in promoting a sense of community spirit and providing a healthy and enjoyable family day out.”
There will be routes of one or two miles according to the age of the child, along a safe route through Spud Wood.
Organisers are hoping local businesses will sponsor the day. Last year sponsors contributed towards goody bags for children, provided balloons and donated raffle prizes.
There will be a variety of stalls, including a healthy fruit stall and apple stall, and a barbecue with environmentally-friendly meat.
Some user groups use the stalls for their own fundraising, but any overall profit from the day will go towards them centre’s building fund.
Anyone interested in helping the event should contact Frances Pardoe on 01925 754525, or email [email protected]
