Calling nature lovers

1

NATURE-lovers are being urged to connect with their local environment by attending the Warrington Nature Conservation Forum.
Conservation issued from across the town will be discussed at the meeting in the Risley Moss Visitor Centre, Birchwood on March 6 at 10.30am.
Those who attend can also hear about a four year project called ‘Artery of Life’, which aims to connect local people with the riverside environment along the upper Mersey Estuary near Warrington.
The talk will be followed by refreshments and the chance to hear more about a number of wildlife surveys happening in the town.

  1. Many thanks Gary for featuring the forum.

The Warrington Nature Conservation Forum conducted a number of surveys every year to learn more about species in Warrington. Recently these have included bats, birds, voles, wildflowers etc.

The Swift survey for instance, led by Brian Martin, which has taken place over several years has found that numbers of Swifts in Warrington are declining.

One of the main reasons is due to the practice of using modern facia on old houses that stops the birds returning to their nests in May. As a consequence of his work Brian has successfully advised a housing association in Macclesfield on where to make holes in the new facia. This has meant that Swifts have been able get back to their nests. It is hoped that this advice will be followed in Warrington resulting in an increase in the number of Swifts in our Town.

In addition the forum are hoping to be given permission to house bird boxes in a local church spire.
