Grey skies fail to dampen Warrington Walking Day

GREY skies greeted what is believed to be

Warrington’s 179th Walking Day today – but the rain held off for the start of the walk with gloomy weather not

stopping thousands of people taking to the streets.
Warrington’s Mayor Peter Carey (pictured above) was enjoying the event he first took part in 60 years ago, while Borough Minister Stephen Kingsnorth came of age with his 21st walk.
Town centre streets were closed to traffic from 8.30am as hundreds of children and adults took part in the annual demonstration of Christian Witness.
As usual the procession started from the Town Hall lawn at 10.30am. But before that there were hold-ups on roads leading into the town centre as walkers from various churches made their way to the Town Hall.
The Mayor took the salute in Sankey Street, opposite the Golden Gates, as the walkers, led by the contingent from St Elphin’s Parish Church.
Then the huge crocodile of colour followed Sankey Street, Arpley Street, Museum Street and St Austin’s Lane to Friars Gate, where it turned right and went down Bridge Street to make a U-turn near Bridge Foot. It then returned up Bridge Street to Market Gate and Horsemarket Street.
Pictured right Rita Mathews from the Red Rose Band in Preston brought some colour to the occasion in her first Warrington Walking Day.
