Late goal denies Wire win

AN 89th minute equaliser denied Warrington Town a thoroughly deserved three points from this hard fought encounter in Yorkshire, whilst, at the same time, extended their unbeaten league run to six games, with a tough run of games coming up against teams pushing for promotion, over the busy Xmas and New Year period.
Manager Shaun Reid made one change from the side that defeated Bamber Bridge in their previous match, James McCarten coming in at centre half, in place of Adam Mitter who dropped to the substitutes bench. Neither side dominated proceedings immediately, with Kevin Townson shooting over in the 6th minute, the closest that either side came to a goal early on.
The best of the possession belonged to Warrington, but the stubborn rearguard of the home side meant that chances were at a premium, Phil Mooney shooting over from long range. The home sides first chance fell to midfielder Liam Radford, but he saw his header go into the side netting when well placed.
Town hit the front in the 19th minute, Kevin Townson playing a pin point throughball for strike partner Ciaran Kilheeney (pictured above and right) to run onto and dispatch beyond Ossett keeper Matt Convey and into the bottom corner to score his third goal in four games since he signed for the club from Chorley.
After taking the lead, Town continued to dominate possession, but a combination of determined defending and lack of penetration in the last third was to deny them further, and indeed, it was Ossett who went close to equalising before half time, striker Grant Darley beating full back Phil Doran, before cutting in, and shooting narrowly across the face of Andy Robertson’s goal. The home side went close once again soon after, striker Shane Kelsey shooting into the side netting when through on Robertson.
Twice before half time, Town went close to extending their lead, Peter Dogan shooting wide from distance, before John Miles shot straight at Convey after finding a yard of space in the penalty area. On the stroke of half time, the home side thought they had equalised, Darley finishing well after being played through, only to be ruled out by the assistant referees flag.
The second half saw the home side come more into the game, and seven minutes into the half, they were level, winger Daniel Walsh beating his man to the byline before standing up a cross to the far post, where the on rushing Kelsey headed into the net off the underside of the crossbar, giving Robertson no chance.
The home side were not level for long, as seven minutes later, Town re-took the lead, and it was the in form Miles who put Town back in front, being given time and space on the edge of the box, to curl a shot beyond Convey and into the top corner from the edge of the penalty area.
In what was now a very open game, the home side thought they had equalised soon after, when Walsh shot home from the edge of the box, only for referee Mr Donohue to pull play back for a foul in the build up. With just a quarter of the game to go, Town almost extended their lead, midfielder Jimmy McCarthy forcing a mistake in the home rearguard only to see his shot deflected narrowly wide by a last gasp challenge.
As the game went on, the home side looked more and more likely to find an equaliser, Kelsey narrowly shooting over from a free kick just outside of the penalty area. With only a minute left of the ninety, Ossett substitute James Eyles capitalised on a mistake in the Town rearguard, to bare down on Robertson and coolly finish past Robertson.
Deep into the three minutes of injury time played, Miles had a great chance to win the game for Town, McCarthy forced a mistake from the Ossett defence, and squared to Miles, who screwed his shot wide of the upright from 12 yards, when the former Liverpool player looked certain to score.
