Romans are back in town

THE Romans will be back in Warrington on Saturday – taking part in a community fun day at Causeway Park, off Wilderspool Causeway
Taking centre stage will be a pair of gladiators from the history re-enactment group “Comitatus”.
A Roman couple will also be on hand to demonstrate Roman living and other entertainments will include falconry, a dog display and a performance from the choir of Latchford St James Primary School.
There will be a variety of stalls showcasing the local community, and offering health and wellbeing advice.
Children will be invited to enter a fancy dress competition and dog owners can enter their pets into a dog show, with fun categories such as “dog with the waggiest tail”.
The Community Day has been planned by a group of local residents and councillors, supported by the South Area Stronger Together team.
Cllr Maureen McLaughlin, who chairs the Community Day Planning Group said: “We wanted a theme which the community could really identify with, and we chose ‘Romans’ because of the Roman settlement that once stood in this area.
“It’s really captured the imagination, and we’re especially excited about the gladiator performances, which we think may be a first for Warrington.”
The Mayor of Warrington will open the event at 1pm. Parking will be available on the day at Priestley College on Loushers Lane, with blue badge disabled parking at the Sea Cadet car-park off River Road.
