Warrington Wolves climb to Super League summit as they extend hoodoo over Saints

WARRINGTON Wolves surged to the top of the Super League with a gritty 18-6 victory over St Helens at the BrewDog Stadium.

The clinical victory marked the Wire’s sixth consecutive league win under Sam Burgess. It also extends their remarkable hoodoo over Saints, securing a ninth straight head-to-head victory across all competitions stretching back to 2024.
While St Helens slumped to their third straight defeat and their first home defeat of the season, Warrington capitalised on an uncharacteristically disjointed Saints performance to silence the home crowd.
The hosts struck first in a rainy, hard-fought opening spell when Tristan Sailor crossed over after 18 minutes. Sailor converted his own try to give Paul Rowley’s side an early 6-0 lead.
St Helens suffered a major blow shortly after, however, when skipper Jonny Lomax was forced off with a severe jaw injury.
Warrington clawed their way back right before the break. Standing in for the injured Marc Sneyd, young half-back Ewan Irwin showed great composure to feed Albert Hopoate on the stroke of half-time. Irwin added the extras to level the scores at 6-6.
The second half belonged entirely to the visitors, who held Saints scoreless for the final 40 minutes. In the 55th minute, Josh Smith showcased spectacular pace, sprinting clear to finish a superb near length of the field run. Irwin nailed the conversion to put Wire ahead. The young playmaker then capped off a stellar individual performance in the 70th minute, darting over for a try of his own before converting it to seal the 18-6 win.
A late professional foul saw Josh Thewlis sin-binned, but the 12-man Wolves stood firm defensively to secure the two points and claim the league’s summit.
