Tennis courts to stay open when leisure centre closes

TENNIS fans needn’t worry when Warrington’s Great Sankey Leisure Centre closes for refurbishment – the all-weather outdoor courts will remain open.

The leisure centre will close on Sunday, July 16 but the courts will stay open to cater for the annual surge in interest in the sport that follows Wimbledon.

The 3G sports pitch will also stay open.

One year on from their opening, the tennis courts, which opened last year, thanks to £160,000 funding from the Lawn Tennis Association, now provide a full programme of tennis all year round.

Children’s tennis holiday camps will run throughout the school holidays at Great Sankey and also at Birchwood Leisure and Tennis Complex.
Adults can also pick up a racquet and enjoy a range of learning and development courses.

LiveWire’s Activate programme is tailor-made for beginners, teaching basic tennis skills, while the Aspire programme is targeted at experienced players, who want to continually develop their skills and compete in matches.

Individual tuition is also available for beginners and advanced players, and those who just want a casual game can simply pre-book one of the outdoor courts.

More information about the tennis courses on offer is available from  the tennis co-ordinator on 01925 458213 or [email protected]

The work requiring closure of the leisure centre will transform the existing facility into a multi-million pound neighbourhood hub, which will provide integrated leisure, health, library and culture services in one facility.
