WORK has been completed on a brand new, disabled-friendly play area on Warrington’s Liverpool Road recreation ground.
Designed to be inclusive for all, the £90,000 project has seen the existing play area fully refurbished with new equipment and an outdoor gym, as well as upgraded surfacing and fencing.
Warrington Borough Council has been working closely on the scheme with Warrington Disability Partnership, together with volunteers from The Bam Project, a local charity which is promoting “Play For All” within Warrington.
The partnership has helped deliver a design for Liverpool Road which features an improved, more accessible layout, together with innovative play equipment, suitable for use by a wide range of visitors.
The council leisure chief, Cllr Tony Higgins, joined pupils from Evelyn Street Primary School and representatives of Warrington Disability Partnership and The Bam Project to admire the sparkling new equipment and celebrate the completion of the project.
Cllr Higgins said: “The improvements we have made to parks and play areas in recent months have made a real difference in our communities, breathing new life into a number of locations.
“The Liverpool Road project is the latest example of how we are helping to build inclusive play and activity into the lives of local families.
“What makes this play area extra special is that it has been designed to break down barriers to play and to be accessible to the widest possible range of young people. I’m delighted that this project has been completed – just in time for the summer months – and I look forward to it bringing a great deal of happiness to local children and their families for many years to come.”
Chantelle Hurley, trustee at The Bam Project, said: ““The future for families with multiple needs is going to be a bright one, especially where our local parks are concerned. ‘Play for all’ is our motto and that’s our main goal.”
Grant funding of £50,000 was awarded by FCC Environment through WREN’s FCC Community Action Fund for the scheme, with the council contributing a further £40,000 towards the project.

Out of interest can I ask what equipment has been installed for disabled children please ? As parent of a child with a physical and cognitive disability I would be interested to know.
