Children learn about the Warrington of yesteryear

YOUNG people in Warrington are learning what it would have been like to grow up in the town years ago – thanks to a project organised by charity group The Relationships Centre.
Local schools are engaging in the charity’s Heritage Lottery funded project “Us and Them and Way Back When.”
Youngsters from Woolston Brook School got a chance to see what life was like in Warrington during World War 2 when they visited the Burtonwood Heritage Centre.
The children are, through the project, completing an arts award, which will result in them receiving a nationally recognised award for their work.
Teacher Will Woods said: “The morning was a great success as it fulfilled the children’s current class involvement in the Heritage Project, which combines leaning about Warrington’s local history, with their research for future art projects.”
The pupils have already created paintings that highlight the importance of garden allotments in WWII and visit has allowed them to get up close to objects, images and old photographs which they will now use to produce art work towards their arts award.
Jackie Cooling, The Relationships Centre project worker engaging with the children said, “This project is wonderful because young people are encouraged to look at what life was like for other young children growing up in Warrington through the years.  This gives them a wonderful insight into how Warrington has developed into the wonderful town we are lucky to live in today”.
“John Cotterill and the expert staff at the centre answered a raft of questions from the group, and their knowledge about the former American air-base ensured that many historical facts and humorous stories will continue to be told by generations to come.”
