POLICE at Warrington have issued a warning about a scam text being sent to young people – purporting to be from the police.
The text claims the recipient has been selected for a random phone scan by Warrington Police.
It asks those under the age of 12 to text their date of birth and certificate of proof. Those over 12 are asked to text NO if they do not wish to proceed and YES if they do.
But the text then says that if you do not reply it will be seen as suspicious and the phone will be scanned.
The text message also contains the recipient’s name.
Police ask parents to discuss the matter with their children.
Anyone receiving the text is asked to call police on 101.
A spokesman said: “The police would never contact anyone in this way.”
