POLICE were called to Culcheth after a youth was assaulted outside the Co-op store in the village centre.
It is understand a man was arrested near the scene – but no details have been given by police.
Staff at the Co-op went to the youth’s assistance. He was in a state of shock, with blood on his face and hands.
Local businessman Paul Taylor said: “The  youth in the village don’t cause much trouble at all. They may hang around in groups in sheltered, lit area, but what else are they supposed to do?
“All they have in Culcheth is a single youth shelter – and that is our fault.
“Even the shelter they have has no lighting as it was a pilot project so it’s far from ideal.
“They really need somewhere to go other than the existing clubs and youth groups run by churches and the scouts as these groups aren’t everyone’s cup of tea even though they provide a great service for those that use them.
“It’s about time we had some decent provision for the youth here in the village and we need to provide it sooner rather than later.”
