Prison dogs show off their skills – at college

THEY were alert, eager to please and responded well to instruction.
But it wasn’t the students at Warrington’s Priestley College who were put to the test – it was the visiting prison dogs who were demonstrating their skills.
Team members from HM Prison Manchester visited the college to speak to Public Service students about possible careers in the prison service.
They were joined by three dogs including George, a springer spaniel who demonstrated how he can sniff out drugs and even mobile phones.
Tutor Paul Mackinnon said: “A lot of our Public Services students will be keen to join the police or prison service so an experience like this opens their eyes to the opportunities that are out there.”
Around 40 students heard from prison staff as they described their job and how they achieved their positions in the prison service.
Among them was Priestley alumni Natalie Egan who, two years ago, was among the students watching a very similar demonstration.
Natalie is now in operational support at the prison.
She said: “I was fascinated by the job and I knew it was what I wanted to do.”
