Local housebuilder delivers £100m boost to UK economy

WARRINGTON-based housebuilder, Barratt & David Wilson Homes (DWH) North West, has delivered a £100m boost to the UK economy in the past year.

Part of Barratt Developments, which was this month named *Best Large Housebuilder of the Year, the housebuilder has built a total of 551 homes and contributed over £100.6 million to the UK’s economic output.

The company has also supported around 1800 jobs, through either direct or indirect employment of sub-contractors and suppliers.

Its activities this year are estimated to have generated £22.7 million in extra taxes – Corporation Tax, NI, PAYE, SDLT and local council tax payments.

The new homes will generate payments of £4.5 million from the New Homes Bonus – a grant paid by central government to local councils to reflect and incentivise housing growth in their areas. It is based on the amount of extra Council Tax revenue raised for new-build homes, conversions and long-term empty homes brought back into use.

The achievements are highlighted in the new report which measures the housebuilder’s social and economic contribution to the North West over the past year (1st July 2015 – 31st June 2016).

It includes key figures relating to the company’s support for the housebuilding supply chain, local communities, environment, public services and employment. Figures include:

  • Supported 1800 jobs though Barratt & DWH North West, its contractors and suppliers
  • Directly employed 21 new graduates, trainees and apprentices
  • Supported 380 subcontractor companies and 310 supplier companies

90% of components used in the construction process were manufactured in the UK

  • £7.7 million expenditure on physical works benefiting local communities, including highway and environmental improvements and community facilities
  • £5.7 million of local contributions including affordable housing sales and Section 106 contributions
  • Generated £22.7 million in tax to support public services
  • Planted or retained 18,000 trees or shrubs on its developments
  • 135 homes achieved Code For Sustainability Homes Level 3 or above
  • 9 hectares of green space created through public open space and private gardens

Graham Swann, Barratt & DWH North West MD, said: “We’re proud to be a major force in the growth and prosperity of both our own region, and the wider UK economy, and look forward to continuing our work in 2017.

“Our commitment to sustainability and protecting the environment is particularly progressive and of the 500 or so homes built, nearly 25% have achieved Code For Sustainable Homes Level Three or more.”

*Barratt Developments has recently been named Large Housebuilder of the Year at the prestigious National Housebuilding Awards, known as the “Oscars” of the residential construction industry.

The report on Barratt & DWH North West’s Socio-Economic Footprint in 2016 was carried out by planning consultant, Nathaniel Lichfield & Partners (NLP).
