New aqua based rehab session for older people launches

An exciting new exercise session for over 55s will be offered by LiveWire thanks to funding from Active Cheshire’s Active Anywhere Fund.

Aqua Rehab is a non-impact based exercise class suitable for all abilities and is being piloted at Woolston Neighbourhood Hub from Tuesday 22th November.

The sessions make use of aqua flotation belts which allow users to be buoyant in both shallow and deep water allowing them to have a wider range of movement and carry out exercises they perhaps would not be able to do on dry land.

It is perfect for those who are recovering from illness or injury that prevents them from taking part in other forms of exercise through lack of mobility or through pain.

The non-impact classes will also use specialist equipment such as water weights and gloves to increase the intensity of the workout for those who want to improve their health and fitness further.

Sixteen instructors from across LiveWire have completed a bespoke training course and are excited to be delivering such a new and innovative session for LiveWire.

The sessions will be delivered by LiveWire’s lifestyles team who are trained to work with those with health conditions and offer tailor made exercises to suit different individuals.

Senior LiveWire advisor Louise Shannon, who took part in the training, said: “Aqua Rehab utilises the benefits of water to allow people to take part in exercises that they may not be able to on land.

“The buoyancy of the water allows people to have a wider range of movement in the water and supports their bodies to take pressure of tired and aching body parts.

“The hydrostatic forces also lower the heart rate making it more efficient in the water – therefore people can complete activities without becoming uncomfortable and breathless whilst still getting an excellent workout.

“This makes it ideal for those with health conditions and chronic pain conditions to be able to exercise again.

“I’m really pleased we can offer this session with specialist equipment and trained instructors and hope to develop the sessions and have a wider offer in the future.”

The sessions are priced at just £1 until March 2017 and booking is not required at the moment.
