MP says Labour must be held accountable for rejecting devolution deal

VIDEO: WARRINGTON South MP David Mowat says the borough council’s controlling Labour group “must be held accountable” for rejecting the devolution deal which had been on the table from the government.

During an exclusive video interview Mr Mowat, who was disappointed Warrington didn’t take up the offer of a devolution deal and elected Mayor with Cheshire and Chester, said: “They have got to be accountable for what they have lost and the people of Warrington need to reflect on that.

“The deal which was on offer has gone for this year now. There wont be any deal with Manchester or Merseyside which is what some of the Labour group wanted.

“This is a set back for our town and those who made the decision need to be held accountable.”

Meanwhile Mr Mowat said he was “surprised and disappointed” by the BREXIT decision, although the 17 million who had voted for it was more than any government had been elected by.

“The sooner we can have clarity with Europe and other countries, the better.”

Meanwhile Mr Mowat also explained, why he voted with the government on the unpopular decision to cut benefits which would impact on people with disabilities – a decision which was eventually over turned following a public out cry.

  1. That’s some hedging around the questions by Mr Mowat,
The controlling group of WBC ” have got to be accountable for what they have lost and the people of Warrington need to reflect on that.” he says. He mentions “opportunities” and “money”… What ‘opportunities’ and what ‘money’? Perhaps he could be a little more specific? As it stands the only thing the people of Warrington will be reflecting on will be, why is he being so evasive?
