REVIEW: AC/DC Etihad Stadium Manchester

1

HAVING witnessed AC/DC in their various guises since their Highway to Hell tour in Manchester way back in 1979 – they are like a fine wine, getting better and better with age.

Fast forward on the Rock ‘n’ Roll train from the Apollo in ’79, with the late great Bon Scott on vocals, who tragically died just a matter of months later, to the Etihad in 2016, with Guns ‘n’ Roses front man Axl Rose, amply filling the boots of the unfortunate Brian Johnson, sidelined with a hearing problem.

One constant throughout has been pocket dynamo Angus Young, who although now in his 60s, still has more energy than many rock stars half his age.

Few bands can pull off stadium rock successfully – but with AC/DC they are the masters of stadium rock and you will be hard pressed to witness a better rock ‘n’ roll show, for pure energy and theatre.

From start to finish Angus, Axl and the team deliver the goods from the stunning moon land video backdrop which kicks starts the show, to the final For Those about to Rock six cannon finale.

Axl Rose – filling big boots in style

The two hour 15 minute set simply goes in the blink of an eye, with every song a classic. From the Opening Rock or Bust there was a mix of the old, the new and everything in between, including some old classics like Riff Raff and Sin City, TnT and Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap.

Of course there were the classics like Back in Black, Hells Bells, Thunderstruck and Highway to Hell to name but a few

If you closed your eyes it could have been Bon Scott or Brian Johnson hitting out the notes as Axl delivered the goods. It is hard to believe some people demanded refunds when they heard that Axl would be taking over from Johnson

Those of you who did – you missed an absolute classic show – possibly never to be repeated by the end of the Rock or Bust tour.

Angus and Axl, have certainly gelled and are already talking of a joint project after the Guns & Roses front man completes his future commitments.

Who knows what this could involve. Will there by a hybrid band, will Brian Johnson, who is said to be winning his battle with a hearing problem, return for one more album – who knows? But one thing is for certain – if AC/DC every return to Manchester, they will sell out within a matter a hours!

  1. My first time at the age of 38 witnessing the greatest rock band, I now realise why they are the loudest rock group around! I still have a ringing in my ears and my feet are tingling from the music.

Loved every second of it. Axl did a very good job, hit every note and didn’t try to impersonate Brian. Angus – what a guitarist and a complete buddle of energy, with sweat dripping from him he made the show.
