When the Town Hall turned purple, green and blue

WARRINGTON Town Hall was lit up as never before as the town joined 12 other towns and cities across the country for Fibromyalgia Awareness Day.
With some help from Culture Warrington, the historic building was floodlit in purple, green and blue – all to raise awareness of the chronic condition and change perceptions that have held fast for hundreds of years.
Mayor Cllr Geoff Settle said: “People keep asking me ‘What do you and the Mayoress like about your role?
“Well, quite simply it is helping and facilitating people like Beth Urmston achieve things.”
The Mayor didn’t know Beth or understan her chronic disease until she came to his parlour a couple of weeks ago and now she is a friend and he is very aware about what Fibromyalgia does to your body and mind.
He has used his role as Mayor of Warrington to spread the word.
Beth said “The light up event has achieved everything it was meant to and more.  The level of publicity and attention it brought to this chronic condition has hopefully started the ball rolling.
“We have much to thank The Mayor of Warrington for and he will be forever held in great esteem for his support.”
In 2014 Beth founded Flare Magazine and Awareness Group – which is based in Warrington but has a worldwide membership. The magazine has been nominated for this year’s National Diversity Awards.
Cllr Settle said: “Although Beth is in constant pain and also suffers with chronic fatigue, at times unable to lift her head from the pillow or raise her arms, she is determined to raise awareness of fibromyalgia, myalgic encephalomyelitis and chronic fatigue.”

  1. Geoff Settle - Mayor of Warrington on

This is definitely one of our highlights of the year, thanks for everyone’s help and advice, especially Gill on reception who told me something similar had been done in the past and who did it – I just had to argue the cash and pledge the money.
