TRIBUTES have been paid to a  popular Warrington councillor who is stepping after nine years’ service on the borough council.
Labour’s Cllr Steve Roberts has decided not to seek re-election in May for health reasons.
He has represented Poplars and Hulme ward since May 2007 and has taken a keen interest in housing and health issues.
Cllr Roberts says he “carefully considered” his decision but decided to tell colleagues that he was stepping down to concentrate on his continuing recovery.
He said: “Although I am disappointed not to be able to stand again as a candidate for the Labour Party here in Warrington North this year, I have relished the opportunity to represent the people of Poplars and Hulme over the past nine years.
“Having discussed the issue with my family, my colleagues John and Brian, and taken advice from my consultant, I came to the difficult decision to withdraw on Saturday to concentrate on my continuing recovery.
“I will continue to represent my ward to the best of my ability during my remaining months on the council.
“I would like to thank my colleagues for all their support over the years. I have enjoyed working as part of a strong, committed Labour team and I hope residents will continue to put their trust and faith in Labour once again in May.
“Only the Labour Party will defend the residents of Poplars and Hulme from the savage cuts being forced upon us by this Conservative
Government.”
Fellow ward councillor John Kerr-Brown added: “Steve has been a great ambassador for Poplars and Hulme and given local residents a strong
voice at the Town Hall. He has been a strong advocate for people in this area, strived to tackle inequality, and address a host of housing and health-related issues. He also helped to lead the local campaign against any development on Peel Hall and will be remembered fondly by residents throughout the community.”
