Town chairman wants more 1,000+ crowds

WARRINGTON Town chairman Toby Macormac has a vision of seeing gates of more than 1,000 every week at Cantilever Park, as the club prepares for the next step towards the title this Saturday.

Scarborough Athletic visit Town in the first home league game since a five-year league high crowd of 1,095 turned out to watch Shaun Reid’s men beat only realistic title rivals Northwich Victoria 4-2 in a gripping contest.

Since then, Warrington have won two more league games to move nine points clear at the top of the table, as well as securing their safe passage in the Cheshire Senior Cup with a win over Northwich Manchester Villa on Tuesday.toby

With 15 league games to go, including seven at home, the town is starting to buzz at the prospect of its football team moving up a level in the football pyramid, the first step of its ambitious journey.

Macormac said: “It was a phenomenal response from the people of the town for the Northwich game.

“We had only anticipated around 600, and we got 1,100. Everyone worked very hard to manage that number. If 100 of those extras from that day come back, great.

“It’s definitely part of the vision of the club to be getting 1,000 through the gate on a regular basis, and the last game shows that it’s possible even in the division we’re in.

“So in a few years, if we’re up there with the likes of Halifax, Altrincham teams like that with a core away support, and if we can match that with core numbers of home supporters, we could be getting those gates every week.

“It’s not just about the extra gate receipts. You’ve got more people on the concourses, shop takings go up and just the brand. At the same time as we’re getting 1,000 people in, you’re selling and pushing your brand out there. People are going home with home shirts, hats and scarves and it gets the team name out there. If they each tell five people, and those people tell another five people, it soon grows.

“For where we are in January, yes it was the top two, but to get a response like that from the crowd is amazing. Seeing a lot of people down here that I know myself that hadn’t been down for a while, or had never been, and had some good feedback from them and had people saying that they’re looking forward to coming back, hopefully starting with this Saturday.”

Warrington Town face Scarborough Athletic on Saturday (3pm kick-off). You can pay on the turnstile at £8 adults, £5 concessions, £2 for U16s. U16s are free with a paying adult.
