“Country needs an effective opposition” says Lib Dem MP

1

THE country is crying out for an effective and progressive opposition and it is up to the Liberal Democrats to fill the gap.”
This was the message from Greg Mulholland, the Liberal Democrat MP for Leeds North West speaking at the Warrington Liberal Democrat annual general meeting.
Mr Mulholland said: “It was Liberal Democrat peers in the House of Lords who led the way in opposing the reduction of tax credits.
“Labour peers just sat on their hands.  Labour MPs are preoccupied with undermining their own leader rather than mounting an effective opposition to the government.
“A £27 billion windfall has given the chancellor room to manoeuvre in his Autumn Statement and has allowed him to make the U-turns on tax credits and police budgets.  Both these are welcome but they can’t disguise the fact that this was a deeply political budget from a headline-driven chancellor who is pre-occupied by his next career move.
“The budget will unravel as he continues his ideological crusade to slash spending and attack working families on welfare.  It isn’t necessary and would not have happened if the Liberal Democrats were still in Government.  I am very proud that when we were in coalition, we were responsible for introducing the Pupil Premium and increasing the income tax thresholds.  Both these are hugely beneficial to the less well off in our society.”
Ian Marks who lost his seat on the  borough council in May was elected chairman of Warrington Liberal Democrats for the coming year.  Vice Chairman is Ryan Bate who stood as the parliamentary candidate in Halton at the general election.
Ian said, “We are delighted that since the May elections lots of new people in Warrington have joined the party.  Many of these are young and already taking an active part in our campaigning.  This bodes well for the future.”

When a political party elects as their chairman someone who hasn’t got enough public support to gain a seat on the borough council it seems obvious that “the opposition” is all they will ever be!
