War memorials to be restored

PLANNING chiefs at Warrington have approved proposals to restore or replace three weathered memorial plaques at Penketh Library commemorating the fallen of two world wars and other conflicts.
Members of the borough council’s development management committee approved the plan unanimously.
The plaques are on a wall at Penketh Library, in Honiton Way and they commemorate men from Penketh, Great Sankey and Cuerdley who gave their lives in World War 1, World War 2 and other conflicts.
The World War 1 plaque will be cleaned and refinished and the other two will be replaced to match the older plaque.
The two newer plaques were made from poorer quality materials and have deteriorated, with some of the lettering falling off.
The proposals came from  Penketh Parish Council, Penketh British Legion, St Mary’s Church, Great Sankey and Penketh High School.Photographs have been taken of the plaques to ensure the replacements will be replicated correctly.
The most recent plaque bears just two names – Steven Birdsall and Thomas Sephton, friends who died in Afghanistan.
