FIVE people were rescued when fire broke out in a block of flats in the centre of Warrington early today.

The incident involved a property – formerly the offices of a trade union but later converted into flats – on Froghall Lane, Warrington.

The road was closed from the junction of Midland Way and Crosfield Street and Bewsey Street and Bewsey Road – but has now been re-opened after firefighters brought the blaze under control.

Cheshire Fire Service said five people were rescued from the second floor of the property.  Firefighters used ladders to get them out of the building. About 20 people were in the building when the fire broke out, but most escaped unaided.

Two tarantulas died in the blaze and it is believed the fire started in a heating mat in the spiders’ tank
