MANY students from Warrington are celebrating their GCSE and BTEC results – with an overall improvement on last year of five Grade A*-C up by three per cent to 58.5 per cent.

At Lymm High School there was a “very significant improvement” in the headline figure with 73% of students achieving 5 or more GCSEs at grades A*-C  including English and Mathematics and 56% achieving the Ebacc.

There were some outstanding results for many students, with almost 60% achieving at least 1 A*/A grade.

The students who deserve a special mention for achieving at least 8 A* grades were:
Alix Tavernier (10 A*s, 1 A, 1 A^) Aoife Davenport (10 A*s, 1 A^) Kyra Baird (9 A*s, 2 As)
Grace Rooney (9 A*s, 1 A) Fan Grayson (9 A*s, 1 C) Victoria Ramsbottom (8 A*s, 2 As, 1 A^)
Mark Pyman (8 A*s, 3 As) Abigail Smith (8 A*s, 3 As) Isobel Green (8 A*s, 2 As) Hannah Burton (8 A*s, 2 As) and Jonathan Hughes (8 A*s, 2 As).

Headteacher, Gwyn Williams said: “We are very pleased with this set of results and delighted for all those students who have done so well. These are a strong set of results in themselves and a big improvement on last year. Overall, and taken with last week’s ‘A’ level results, they reflect the fact that the school is in very good shape.”

Meanwhile Manchester High School for Girls’ Alice McMahon (16) from Warrington was delighted with her 8 A*s and 1 A at GCSE.

The budding comedian, who regularly lights up School events with her stand-up routine, said: “I am so happy with these results. I was really ill during the exams so to do this well is fantastic! I am coming back to Manchester High’s Sixth Form Centre to study Chemistry, Physics, Maths and German at A Level, and I can’t wait!”

Meanwhile across Warrington schools are celebrating another set of fantastic results with provisional GCSE exam results indicating 58.5% of pupils achieved five A*-C grades, an improvement on last year of three per cent.

National figures are yet to be confirmed, but reports so far suggest most areas have remained the same as last year so Warrington schools are bucking the national trend with improved results. Within the overall results there was also improvement in Maths (up 6.3%) and English (up 3%). Not all results are in, but those that are in show a positive picture as 78 students achieved  A* – A grades this year.

National reports suggest that the gender gap has narrowed, possibly due to the change in balance between exams and coursework this year, in Warrington the percentage of boys attaining 5A*-C has improved by 7.2%, and girls improved by 1.6%, narrowing the gap by 5%.
