MORE than 80% of two year olds are benefitting from free nursery places resulting in Warrington being ranked second in a national league table.

Warrington is second in the Department of Education’s league table – only marginally beaten by Richmond upon Thames at 85%.

Two-year-olds from the 40% most disadvantaged backgrounds are eligible for 15 hours of free childcare per week.

The council’s Free Early Years team closely monitors places and attendance to ensure continuous take up of the offer, along with support and promotion from children’s centre staff.

Cllr Jean Carter, executive board member for children’s services, said: “I am really pleased and proud to see Warrington recognised for having one of the highest take up rates in the country.

“Not only are more parents accessing free childcare, but more places are in top-quality settings.

“Providing good quality early education can make a huge difference and ensures children make the best possible start in life”
