WARRINGTON-based housing provider Your Housing Group has announced it is to join hands with the Alzheimer’s Society as its Charity of the Year, following a staff vote.
The group is one of the UK’s largest providers of social housing, and one of the largest developers of retirement living accommodation with six new developments opened in the last year – all built with dementia friendly elements to help residents move around the developments.
Alzheimer’s Society is the leading support and research charity for people with dementia, their families and carers. There are currently 850,000 people with dementia in the UK, with numbers expected to rise to one million by 2021.
Stephen Haigh, Your Housing Group’s executive director of specialist housing and development said: “As a group we are really looking forward to working with the Alzheimer’s Society, and raising funds to help them to continue providing vital support to thousands of people across the UK. “A huge element of our business is retirement living developments, and we are passionate about creating homes so that people can remain independent for as long as possible. We take fundraising extremely seriously and are looking forward to getting started”.
The group’s employees will spend the next 12 months raising money in a variety of ways, including Memory Marathon walks and runs, national fundraisers, raffles and cake sales. They hope to exceed its previous year’s totals; £31,660 raised for charities, including £19,000 for Macmillan.
Staff also donated a total of 690 volunteering hours to help with community initiatives.
Jeremy Hughes, chief executive at Alzheimer’s Society, said: “We are delighted that Your Housing Group is giving their time to support us. One in three people over 65 will die with dementia. It is more than just memory loss; it robs people of their lives and has a devastating impact
on families and loved ones.”
