Wild Bettys get on their bikes for Abbie

A WARRINGTON based women’s cycling group named Wild Bettys completed a 40 mile bike ride for Abbie Heaney, a local girl with Rett Syndrome.

The group covered 40 miles from Southport to Stockton Heath to raise money for Abbie’s Trust.

Abbie is a three-year-old local girl from Stockton Heath with Rett Syndrome, a rare neurological disorder that occurs in 1 in 12,000 female births, and very rarely, in male births. Rett Syndrome causes girls to lose the ability to walk, talk, purposefully use their hands and eat properly.

Wild Betty ride leader and event organiser Helen Guttridge said: “The Wild Bettys are a group of local lady cyclists who were looking to find a local cause and help them raise funds. A fellow Betty mentioned her friend’s daughter has Rett Syndrome and was trying to raise funds for specialist equipment. As this is a predominantly female condition, we thought it the perfect cause for our all-female cycling club”.

“For many of the ladies this ride was to be the furthest they had ever ridden, and as well as making a personal achievement knew that they would be helping little Abbie. Thankfully the weather was good and although a little windy in Southport, we completed the ride in a very respectable four hours. And of course, we had lots of laughs on the way.”

Abbie’s mum Sarah said: “To see these ladies cycling back into Stockton Heath, knowing that they had done this for Abbie was overwhelming. They deserved the cake waiting for them!!”

“The generous donations means we are able to buy Abbie specialist equipment that will enable her to communicate with her family; and give her access to therapies that will delay or prevent the onset of other health issues common to Rett Syndrome.”

“We are so grateful to Wild Bettys and all the sponsors. They are helping Abbie reach her full potential.”
